Last night brought the shocking news in which Captain James T. Kirk would return star Trekhis young self is played by The Vampire Diaries‘Paul Wesley in the second season of Strange new worlds. Unless some generally trekking-y shenanigans timey-wimey are on the cards, odds are this is it a young Kirk in a time before him captained on Agency. But what do we know about Kirk’s early career in Starfleet?

What were the days of Kirk’s Academy?

The response is surprisingly small, at least on screen. Kirk’s rise in the ranks has been frankly meteoric, given what little we know: Jim entered Starfleet Academy in 2252 and in 2265 he was in command of the Federation flagship on his iconic five-year mission. Five of those 13 years were spent in the Academy’s command training program, balancing studies and practical education with a Starfleet ensign role, serving as an officer cadet, and participating in missions, including a diplomatic mission to the planet Axanar, which earned him the Axanar Peace Mission Palm Leaf. Kirk, of course, also managed not to get completely expelled from the Academy, but instead he wentt praised, for hacking the infamous unbeatable Kobayashi Maru practice test, becoming the first Academy student to overturn the winless scenario.

If we knew little about Kirk’s time at Starfleet Academy, we know even less about his early career. In star Trek first season in the episode “Court Martial” we learn that one of Kirk’s first errands was aboard the US.S. Republic how isnsign, where he served alongside one of his academy instructors, Lt. Benjamin Finney. Finney and Kirk were close friends after their stint at the Academy, but their relationship soured aboard the Republic when a mistake made by Finney nearly destroyed the ship and Kirk recorded his role in the mistake, leading Finney to be reprimanded by Starfleet and left reckless for promotion.

Which is different from Kirk, which he was Very very fast through the ranks. By the mid-2250s, Kirk was already allieutenant, and returned to the Academy to teach. In 2255, as detailed in the second season episode “Obsession,” the first deep sassignment pace was aboard the US.S. farragutwhere Lieutenant Kirk was assigned as a member of Fr.crew of hasher guns. Just two years after his appointment, however, the disaster struck the farragut: On the planet Tycho IV, the ship encountered a non-corporeal entity known as the cloud creature Dikironium, who attacked the ship and killed two hundred crew members, including the farragutCaptain, Garrovick.

Kirk, one of the few survivors, was traumatizedand from the event, believing his delay in following the orders to fire on the cloud creature (which had weakened him to the point of losing consciousness) directlygive to disaster. How did Kirk become captain of the Agency?

That rapid rise meant that in 2265, when Kirk was just 32, he became the new Captain of the U.S.S. Agency, replacing Christopher Pike, who had served aboard the ship since 2250, before Kirk even joined the Starfleet Academy. Although we don’t know the exact details of how or why Pike left the Agency“The Menagerie”, the famous first season star Trek episode that uses footage from the series original scrapped pilot, “The Cage”, tells us that Kirk and Pike had only met once before the events of that episode, when Pike was promoted to captain of the fleet, which may be the time when his service to edge of Agency came to a conclusion.

We know that from then on, Kirk and Pike’s careers would lead them: Kirk on his iconic turn of duty boldly go where no man had gone before, Pike to the tragedywhen an accident during an inspection aboard a training ship saw him exposed to lethal levels of radiation, disfiguring him and leaving him on mobile life support. What else could we learn about Kirk’s early years will probably come to pass Strange new worlds.
