Rock-and-roll “is not defined by any genre, rather a sound that moves youth culture,” the statement read. “Dolly Parton’s music impacted a generation of young fans and influenced countless artists who followed. Her nominations to be considered for entry into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame followed the same process as all the other artists who were considered. “
There may also be a logistical reason for denying Parton’s request. Rock Hall pointed out that his nomination had already been included in ballots sent to 1,200 voters this month.
On Monday, Parton voiced in a tweeted statement that although she was “extremely flattered and grateful to have been nominated … I don’t feel I have earned this right. I really don’t want the votes split because of me, so I have to respectfully withdraw. “
“I hope the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame will understand and will be willing to consider me again if I’m ever worthy,” she continued. “This, however, inspired me to release a hopefully big rock ‘n’ roll album at some point in the future, which I’ve always wanted to do!”
Other artists nominated for introduction in 2022 include Beck, Pat Benatar, Kate Bush, Devo, Duran Duran, Eminem, Eurythmics, Judas Priest, Fela Kuti, MC5, New York Dolls, Rage Against the Machine, Lionel Richie, Carly Simon, A Tribe Called Quest and Dionne Warwick. Foundation president John Sykes noted in a press release that the nerd recognized “a diverse group” and referred to the impact of artists on the “sound of youth culture.”
This marks Parton’s first time on a Rock Hall nerd. The February release described her as “a living legend and an example of women’s empowerment” and claimed that her success has broadened the audience for country music.
Warwick also commented on the weirdness of his appointment during a recent episode of “See What Happens Live With Andy Cohen”.
“I’m not rock-and-roller,” she said, adding that “the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as I came to know it many, many, many years ago was specifically for rock and roll. … I feel now, especially when I hear the nomination of Dolly Parton – I’m thrilled for her – that they should rename the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to call it Music Hall of Fame. They are introducing so many other genres, why not?
Some others have rejected Rock Hall earlier, albeit more aggressively, citing a distrust of the music industry figures involved and / or a lack of transparency in the voting process. In 1999, Ozzy Osbourne described the honor as “foolish, because it wasn’t voted on by the fans” and sought to have Black Sabbath removed from the ballot. The band was finally inducted in 2006, the same year the Sex Pistols decided not to attend the ceremony and referred to the Rock Hall in a statement as “urine in wine.” Axl Rose also boycotted the Guns n ‘Roses ceremony in 2012, but made sure to apologize to the city of Cleveland, where Rock Hall is located.
“I think they know how much I really love performing there,” he wrote. “Cleveland does indeed Rock !!”
