Renault Laguna III 2.0T GT 4Control (2008 – 2010), a surreal chassis, from € 6,800

What are collectibles?

These are cars of particular interest, therefore worthy of conservation. Not necessarily old, they still exist in defined quantities, either because the manufacturer has decided, or because their production is stopped. Then, they take advantage of the features that make them particularly desirable: an engine, a chassis, a design or a concept. Finally, they are likely to see their rating increase. One more topic to collect them first of all!

Why is the Renault Laguna III 2.0T GT collectible?

A collectible Lagoon? But yes! The GT is in fact equipped with the 4Control system with four steering wheels, a unique element in its category. It gives the Renault family the efficiency of a sports car, and the manufacturer did not hesitate to oppose a Porsche Boxster in slalom for its promotion. La Laguna obviously won! Initially offered in a petrol version, the GT was later available in a diesel version, an engine that swallowed sales. So much so that the former is extremely rare … And sought after for its exceptional dynamic performance! It could be the future R21 Turbo.

After the resounding failure of the Laguna II, prematurely launched and decked out due to disastrous reliability early in its career, Renault was due to rename its grand sedan. Like Opel, which gave up the Vectra name (in favor of the Insignia) for similar reasons. But no, the diamond was stubborn, even going so far as to create a familiar resemblance between the Laguna II and the III. Bad plan! Of course, there were technical constraints, the platform, which was excellent, was preserved. But the newest is dressed in pale-looking bodywork.

Upon its release in 2007, the Renault Laguna III disappoints with its totally impersonal line, which will be a handicap.

What better way not to highlight the considerable efforts made in terms of quality, the result of Carlos Ghosn’s request to see him appear in the Top 3 of the category on this point? Yet this Laguna III yet resourceful, it did not make an impression during its presentation at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Things got better in 2008 when it received the 4Control four-wheel steering system. In itself, this is not new: Honda, Mazda And Mitsubishi, in particular, they have already proposed comparable devices in the 1980s and 1990s. But the French house has the merit of updating the swiveling rear wheels and offering a differentiator in a rather conservative segment.

The 4Control four-wheel steering system, introduced in 2008, improves the agility of the Laguna.

4Control, how does it work? An electric actuator placed on the rear suspension cross member is connected to the wheels by rods, which make them turn in the opposite direction to the front ones within a limit of 3.5 ° up to 60 km / h, for better maneuverability, and therefore in the same direction, to increase stability. This actuator is entirely controlled by an electronic brain, which manages the steering based on the information sent by the sensor located on the steering column, and is capable of detecting sporty driving, then adjusting the angle of the rear wheels in operation.

In GT, Laguna benefits from the 4Control system and a sportier decoration than that of the other versions.

This device is fitted to the GT version of the Laguna, available as a sedan and station wagon. Under the hood, there is initially only one petrol block, the F4R widely used in Renault. Here it develops 205 hp, so it guarantees good performance, as well as enjoying proven reliability. For its part, the equipment includes ESP, 18 alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, audio system, automatic headlights and wipers, cruise control, mixed leather-Alcantara upholstery, xenon headlights or even the reversing radar. Nice equipment!

Especially since the price remains reasonable, at € 30,000, or € 34,300 today according to INSEE. Sales started slowly (7% of the total Lagunas mix), because gasoline units were not popular at the time. Also, when in 2009, the GT finish is embellished with diesel blocks, it greatly increases its success. Except that the essence then becomes purely anecdotal in the orders. Also, at the end of 2010, when the Laguna benefits from a slight restyling, only the diesels remain in GT finish! La Laguna will last until 2015, without reaching its commercial goals, despite its three-year warranty it should reassure customers.

Of course, the Laguna GT is also available as a station wagon, says Estate, with bodywork appearing shortly after launch, for 2008. It will be voted the most beautiful car of the year ...

How much ?

Laguna GT 2.0T, in sedan or station wagon version, there are very few on the market. Believing that people are already preserving them! Count € 6,800 for a nice example with more than 180,000 km and € 8,500 at around 130,000 km. We can imagine that cars with less than 100,000 km already exceed € 10,000. We saw a Laguna 2.0T GT at € 12,000 for 55,000 km… In Spain!

In summer, the trunk volume of the Laguna III varies from 510 to 1,595 l, compared to 450 to 1,375 l for the sedan. Appreciable.

Which version to choose?

Sedan or station wagon? The latter has many advantages, in terms of habitability and trunk. It was also voted the most beautiful car of the year!

It will be very, very complicated to find a Renault Laguna III GT 2.0T in perfect condition and with low mileage.

Collector’s versions

Any Laguna 2.0T GT in perfect condition and with low mileage is a pure collector’s item because you can’t find any!

No serious and recurring problems to report for the Renault Laguna III 2.0T GT, and above all not on the side of the engine, which is very robust. Here in 2008.

What to monitor?

This is where we see that the fate reserved for Laguna III is unfair. This car is very reliable, especially on petrol. Therefore, there is no notable weakness on the mechanics, both of the motor and of the box.

Outside, at the beginning of his career, some optical blocks were leaking, problem solved.

There are electrical problems in the cabin, not endemic, while the car’s air conditioning has sometimes required reprogramming. The imperfect finish generates some parasitic noise.

Excellent results therefore, if, obviously, the maintenance has been carried out correctly.

It is in the wrapping that the Renault Laguna GT 4Control gives the measure of its talent. The 2.0 turbo petrol engine is efficient but greedy.

Guide

I’ve always found that you sit a little high in Laguna III, but you get used to it. The dashboard exudes a certain opulence, which does not hide a somewhat slack overall ensemble, particularly that of the console between the seats, which moves. This was already the case with the new copies! Fortunately, the seat offers rigorous support.

As we roll over, we notice the flexibility of the engine and the relative firmness of the suspension on the bumps. This improves with increasing speed, while the F4RT manages very nice accelerations, in a progressive manner. It’s not a sweet dream, but its punch can be quite nice.

A cockpit that has become and rather well done for the Laguna III GT, even if the assembly remains well below the references. Color GPS is optional.

And this famous 4Control chassis? It requires a little adaptation because with the rear-axle steering, the slightest action on the steering wheel has a tenfold effect. In the city, the turning radius is very short and on winding roads the car must be maneuvered with a minimum of gestures. Small flaw to report: when it evolves in the virolo around 60 km / h, you never know which way your back will turn because that corresponds to the speed where the law changes. In any case, you don’t need to enter the curve with the brakes to turn it, the Laguna does it for you.

The result is surprising agility, especially since it requires no effort. The remarkable grip adds to the efficiency, a rare level for a non-sports car, even if at the limit the Laguna will suffer understeer. Steering precision (a bit light for my taste) is also impressive, as is stability at high speeds. A family dancer! As for braking, it’s excellent.

For the rest, the soundproofing and comfort are satisfactory: the perfect car for having fun while dragging the children. Consumption is however a bit high, around 9.5 l / 100 km on average.

The young alternative

Fashion is speed in the 80s and the turbo at Renault. Ambitious, this draws in 1987 the 21 Turbo spectacular appearance. In fact, it sports a specific front, that of Giugiaro’s Orca concept, which designed the Renault, side skirts and a beautiful rear spoiler. Under the hood, the 2.0 turbo spits 175 hp, and allows good lap times: 227 km / h peak, 1,000 m from standstill in 27.8 s.

The German competition is better alert, especially as the French benefit from excellent road handling. Reliable but light in construction, the 21 improved its finishes during the 1989 restyling. Soon thereafter it benefited from a Quadra version with four wheel drive, but for 1993 the installation of the catalyst reduced the power to 162 HP. Starting from € 9,000.
