star Trek loves everyone time travel, but perhaps the kind of time travel he loves the most is the ability to take a side step in our present moment. From The journey home to To travel And DS9 episodes like “Future’s End” and “Past Tense”, star Trek sometimes it cannot help but tear itself away from its future to play with our contemporary time – e picard is proving to be no exception.
“Assimilation”, the third episode of picard second seasonit is more a central chapter than a real progressive step forward picardThe current scattered adventure, which destroys both of them Q it’s time to fiddle with the antics and, well, a real trip back in time. Recovering immediately from last week’s escape from the Fascist Confederation that replaced the Federation in this altered timeline, things start badly when poor Elnor gets shot. Then them it gets worse when Picard informs Rios that in order to find out how and where the timeline was changed by Q, they have to give up The mermaid to Queen Borg (or what’s left of her) to trace a sling around the sun that will make a hole in the past and the location of a mysterious “Watcher” who will provide the Picard team with the next steps.
What if you thought Elnor died later The mermaidPower outage following crash landing in La Barre (could get better if they fixed timeline, TBD, TBD) was very bad, things are even worse for the crew: they have to go to Los Angeles! Oh, and it’s 2024, therefore, irreducible trekking fans will know, the United States of this time was not in a very good place in terms of, well … anything, really. Not much is reflected on the screen, although Raffi, who sets aside his grievance for Elnor to lead a mission to look for clues that might expose something not current time to help track down the Watcher, promptly teleports near a of the Sanctuary Zones in style such as those seen in “Past Tense”, and is nearly attacked for good measure. But instead picard it exploits the possibility of being in the future close enough to ours to more explicitly examine contemporary issues and struggles.
While Sette and Raffi meet closelyfrom the observation tower hoping to get an accurate scan of the area, this exam is mostly centered around poor Rios’ experience of 2024. Which honestly starts off hard: the not-quite-operational teleporter sends it in mid-air, leaving it facing a bloody hard landing, and it gets tougher when forced to confront both the state of contemporary American health care and the long, injurious arm of US law enforcement. Taken to a nearby medical center run by a young doctor named Teresa (guest star Sol Rodriguez), Rios finds himself not only shocked at having to confuse adjusting in an effort to maintain his time travel nature.1st secret, but after a US raid iimmigration officers in the center leads to the arrest of both Teresa and himself, his fight left behind. hit is a question of confronting the more explicit idea of what it means to be an immigrant and in particular a person of color at this moment, an element that star Trekthe stays passed in “modern” periods have touched but rarely had a chance to hit how picard does here, albeit briefly.
All the contemporary action in LTO meanwhile, another threat from the past that Jurati and Picard must face aboard the precipitate is opposed The mermaid: Tthe Borg Queen, herself momentarily knocked out by the current flowtions and crashed landing, it is now less enemy and more simply good … a simple old enemy. A risky plan of the two to enter the queen’s core systems – one deemed too risky for Picard given his history as Locutus, even though his new body has no direct connection to his previous assimilation – sees Jurati exposing himself to potential assimilation through a link to queen, in the hope that he can gain access and at least partially revive the Borg matriarch and let her tell them the information they need to know. It’s an incredibly intense sequence, which plays on the relationship Picard and Jurati had during the first season: a cat game-And-hover between the two to learn more about each other, but in this case a game that builds on that connection to keep Jurati grounded in his humanity. We learn more about her past and her true feelings for the people she now surrounds herself with in fits and starts, but it’s all intertwined with the tension that the more human and open she becomes in trying to ground herself, the more Queen Borg could potentially overwhelm her. .
It is probably the most menacing the Borg have ever been in star Trek in a very long time, and even in the victory, when Picard rips Jurati off the link only at the last second, and she dominates the now responsive queen who has no power over either Jurati or Picard, with all the information they need in his head: the qThe whispered threat of ueen that the real danger is that Jurati has impressed she creates a suitably chilling moment. (And, of course, an inevitable hook for when things go even more terribly wrong for the crew at some point in the season.) As Picard himself knows, no one goes from mind to mind with the Borg and comes out unscathed: a past lesson learned that, like so many classics trekking elements that picard is enjoying hugging here, it will become vitally important as this story progresses. Hopefully, it can maintain this playful tendency of loving homage trekkingPast adventures are going on, without everything feeling a little nostalgic for its own sake. B.but for now, even if the stakes are slowly rising, it’s good to see picard he is having some fun with himself in the moment.
